Myanmar is
well-known for her rich heritage of manuscripts written on palm-leaves
and local paper called parabikes. These manuscripts are hand written precious
documents, but unfortunately many are lying neglected. Many have already
been lost due to warfare, insect and the humid climate. |
| These manuscripts
are written not only in the Bama(Burmese)language, but also in Pali and
ethnic languages like Shan and Mon. It is a matter of urgency not only
to preserve the text by microfilming and digitalization, but also to preserve
the medium (palm-leaf or parabike) on which the texts were written. |
| The most
precious and endangered manuscripts are those in remote out-lying regions
of Myanmar like Pakkoku and Yaw to the west of the Ayeyawadi River and
those of the Shan and the Mon ethnic people. This project had preserved
by microfilming and digitalization not only Bama(Burmese) and Pali, but
also old Shan and Mon texts. Catalogue data will also be provided in Romanised
script. |
| Inventories
of over (119) had been taken, scholars and experts had identified and
selected texts for microfilming and digitalization. Access to catalogue
data and full-texts of the manuscripts were given to all scholars via
this website. A few very rare manuscripts will by printed as facsimile
copies. |
